Frequently asked questions
The Marangu Route is nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route" because it's considered the easiest path to the summit, with comfortable hut accommodations at every camp. It's the most accessible route, allowing less experienced trekkers to enjoy the journey with fewer hardships—hence the "Coca-Cola" reference to comfort and ease.
Marangu is significantly easier than Machame. It's less steep, offers comfortable huts instead of tents, and has a gentler ascent profile. The 6-day option includes a rest day at Horombo, which Machame doesn't offer. However, Marangu is more crowded and less scenic. Success rate on Marangu is 85-90%, compared to 65-70% on Machame.
Huts are communal with bunk beds, sponge mattresses, and pillows. Mandara and Kibo huts have 60 beds each; Horombo has 120 beds. Bathrooms and running water are available at Mandara and Horombo huts. Kibo hut has basic latrines. Huts have solar lights, dining areas for shared meals, and a friendly international atmosphere.
Unlike other routes, Marangu descends the same way you came up. You climb via Mandara → Horombo → Kibo, summit Uhuru Peak, then descend Kibo → Horombo → Mandara → Marangu Gate. This means you'll see the same scenery twice, but it's well-maintained and familiar after your ascent.
Yes, Marangu is excellent for first-timers, especially with the 6-day option. Comfortable huts, shared meals, a rest day, and a less steep profile make it beginner-friendly. It's not easier physically (altitude is still challenging), but logistically and psychologically it feels more manageable than camping routes. Success rate is high at 85-90%.
Yes, Marangu can be booked as a private trek. Unlike group departures that share huts with international trekkers, a private trek gives you flexibility, privacy, and dedicated staff. The huts themselves remain communal, but you'll have dedicated guides and porters focused entirely on your group's needs and pace.
8+ days before trek: No cancellation fees. 0-7 days before: 50% of total price charged as penalty. Trek can be postponed to any new date with no extra cost. The 5% online payment surcharge is non-refundable. We strongly recommend travel insurance covering trip cancellation.
