Frequently asked questions
No. This trek reaches Miriakamba Hut at 2,500m, not the summit (4,566m). To summit Meru, you'd need a 4-day trek. This 2-day option is perfect for quick mountain experience, acclimatization or time-limited travelers.
Expect zebras, giraffes, African buffalo, antelopes and colobus monkeys. Elephants are present but less commonly seen on this lower route. Birdlife is excellent. The guide will point out tracks and signs of larger predators, though sightings are rare on this trail.
Moderate. Day 1 is a steady 4–5 hour climb with elevation gain but not steep terrain. Day 2 is downhill and faster (2–3 hours). Good fitness helps, but anyone with reasonable health and stamina can complete this trek. Poles are recommended.
At 2,500m, altitude sickness is rare but possible for some. The trek is short, minimizing exposure. Your guide monitors you and can descend if needed (it's only 2–3 hours down). A medical kit is carried. Drink water, go slow and tell your guide if you feel unwell.
Yes. It's an excellent acclimatization trek before Kilimanjaro. You'll experience similar terrain (forests, altitude, mountain conditions) at a lower altitude with less commitment. Many climbers do this first to test fitness and gear.
Sturdy hiking boots, light layers (mountain mornings are cool), rain jacket, sun hat, sunscreen, water bottle, snacks and trekking poles. Pack light - a day bag is sufficient. Your guide carries the heavy gear. Sleeping bags are provided at the hut
